About
Hill Hounds is a small, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, DC. The group first organized in 2004 to push for a change in DC law to allow for the creation of official dog parks within the city. The park opened on March 25th, 2011 and is open 7 AM to 10 PM all 365 days a year! It does not have an address, since it's not a building, so please see the map below for its location. Having applied to the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to create Kingmsman Field Dog Park in April of 2008, Hill Hounds is the official park partner organization for it. Hill Hounds members worked with DPR staff on the design of the park and while DPR paid for major construction expenses, the organization was responsible for raising money to pay for desired amenities beyond the basics, such as benches and a shade structure. Hill Hounds is also responsible for much of the day to day maintenance at the park, including buying supplies. Kingsman Field, at 13th and D NE, has a long and interesting history. Decades ago, the No. 42 trolley ran east on D Street NE, intersecting with 13th Street NE where its turnaround was located. (The PEPCO power supply building for the trolley stood at the intersection of 13th and D until quite recently.) This area was a thriving neighborhood commercial area, home to a Safeway with an Ottenberg's bakery tucked into the adjacent alley. A few steps away, Kingsman Elementary School towered over the corner of 14th and E NE. A collection of articles covering Hill Hounds and/or Kingsman Field Dog Park.
